چکیده

We were interested to read the paper by LEHTIMÄKI et al. [1] recently published in the European Respiratory Journal, in which those authors reported that ‘‘high pre-treatment levels of J9aw,NO [bronchial nitric oxide flux] are related to symptom relief and improvement of airway obstruction’’ when inhaled fluticasone is given to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Their data complement those which we ourselves have recently published [2].

Correlation of exhaled carbon monoxide and nitric oxide with airflow obstruction in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients

The aim of this study was to quantify lung oxidative stress in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by measuring levels of exhaled carbon monoxide and nitric oxide. Levels of exhaled carbon monoxide, nitric oxide were evaluated in exhaled air of asthma and COPD patients. Moreover, correlation of CO and NO concentrations with degree of airflow obstruction (FEV1% predict...

Exhaled nitric oxide in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive airflow obstruction and a neutrophilic inflammation. Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) may be a marker of disease activity in a variety of lung diseases. We measured exhaled NO in patients with documented COPD and investigated whether the concentration of exhaled NO is related to the severity of disease as defined by lung func...

Measurement of Exhaled Nitric Oxide and Exhaled Breath Condensate in the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma and Other Respiratory Disorders

Description of Procedure or Service Current techniques for diagnosing and monitoring asthma and predicting exacerbations are suboptimal. Two new strategies, evaluation of exhaled nitric oxide and exhaled breath condensate are proposed. These techniques are also potentially useful in the management of other conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic cough. There ...

Clinical use of exhaled biomarkers in COPD

Exhaled breath analysis holds great promise as a diagnostic and investigative tool in COPD and is a new and rapidly expanding field of research in pulmonary disease. Generally speaking, exhaled breath analysis focuses on two areas: measurement of exhaled nitric oxide (ENO) and the detection of biomarkers in exhaled breath condensate (EBC). ENO measurement may not be as useful in COPD as in othe...

Effect of Inhaled β2-Agonist on Exhaled Nitric Oxide in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

The fractional exhaled nitric oxide measured at an expiratory flow of 50mL/s (FENO50) is a marker of airway inflammation, and high levels are associated with greater response to steroid treatment. In asthma, FENO50 increases with bronchodilation and decreases with bronchoconstriction, the latter potentially causing an underestimate of the degree of airway inflammation when asthma worsens. It is...
